Your due date is approaching, and it’s time to pack your hospital bag. You should have your hospital bag ready to go by 36 weeks or 37 weeks pregnant, just in case you go into labor before your due date. I packed mine at 35 weeks because my C Section was scheduled at 37 weeks. Of course, if you want to get a jumpstart on things, by all means start earlier—when to pack a hospital bag is up to you! But it’s a good idea not to leave it for later than 38 weeks It’s fine to throw some items in at the last minute, but you’ll want your bag mostly packed and easily accessible by this point in your pregnancy. Remember that while the hospital will likely provide some essentials, having your own items can make your experience more comfortable. Some items are essential, others will make you feel comfy and remind you of home. Click Here to see some of the items i recommend for you, and your baby. I have also linked them below as a part of the checklist.
Here’s a checklist for mom:
- Photo ID, Insurance Info, Hospital Forms, and Birth Plan (if you have one): These are crucial documents for your hospital stay.
- Eyeglasses (if you wear them): Don’t forget your glasses if you need them.
- Cell Phone and Charger: Consider bringing your regular USB charger cable and a portable power bank.
- Toiletries: While the hospital may provide some basic toiletries, having your own toothbrush, toothpaste, face cream, face wash and hairbrush can make you feel more at home.
- Glasses and/or Contacts: If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them along with saline solution.
- Lotion and Lip Balm: Hospitals can be dry, so having some lotion and lip balm on hand is helpful.
- Deodorant: Stay fresh during your stay.
- Nursing Bra and Breast Pads: If you plan to nurse, having a comfortable nursing bra and breast pads is essential.
- Postpartum Underwear - nurses can easily change you, especially if you had a C section like me and cant do it yourself, they are disposable too
- Nightgown or Pajamas: Something lightweight and comfortable for sleeping.
- Lightweight Bathrobe or Lounger: Throw it on when you have visitors or need to move around.
- Slippers or Cozy Socks with Grip Soles: Keep your feet warm and comfortable.
- Cord Blood Banking Kit (if applicable): If you’re banking your baby’s cord blood, bring the kit along. We used Cord Blood Registry.
- A Pillow and soft Blanket from Home: Hospital pillows and blankets may not be as comfy as your own.
- A Headband or Ponytail Holders: Keep your hair out of the way.
- A Going-Home Outfit: Choose something comfortable for the journey home. Since i gave birth end of July i chose one of my Summer Maxi Dresses
- A Large Water Bottle or Tumbler: Staying hydrated is essential.
- Prescription Medication: If you’re on any medications, don’t forget them.
When packing your hospital bag, don’t forget about the essentials for your precious little one. Here’s a checklist to ensure you have everything ready for your baby’s arrival:
-
Baby Clothes:
- Onesies or Sleepsuits: Pack a few of these for your baby to wear during their stay. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics. Organic cotton is my favorite
- Mittens to prevent accidental scratches.
- Swaddle Blankets: Swaddling can provide comfort and warmth for newborns.
-
Diapers and Wipes:
- Newborn Diapers: Bring a small pack of disposable newborn diapers. I switched to Coterie after my baby was getting red marks around her chunky thighs from the other brands. They are super soft, and we still use them.
- Wipes: Gentle wipes for diaper changes. This kit is a great startup because it included wipes and diapers
-
Feeding Supplies:
- Formula or Breastfeeding Supplies: If you’re formula-feeding, bring pre-measured formula and bottles. For breastfeeding, consider a nursing pillow.
- Burp Cloths: Essential for cleaning up after feeding.
-
Installed Car Seat: You’ll need this to safely transport your baby home from the hospital.
-
Blanket or Swaddle Wrap - A cozy blanket or swaddle wrap for keeping your baby warm.
-
Going-Home Outfit- Choose a cute and comfortable outfit for your baby’s first journey home.
-
Baby Hat and Socks or Baby Booties to keep your baby cozy.
-
Pacifiers (if desired). Some babies find comfort in pacifiers.
-
Baby Book or Keepsake to record your baby’s birth details
Congratulations, and best wishes for a smooth delivery! Sending you all the positive energy, courage, and love as you welcome your baby into this world. You’ve got this!
With love and best wishes
